AUSTRALIAN FRONTYARD
"Australian Frontyard" is a hand-painted linocut that depicts a house in the Australian suburbs. Some might ask, “Do kangaroos actually hop around the suburbs of Australia?” Well, they don't, but when I was creating this linocut, I first stopped by a house with a caravan and did a quick photoshoot. I pushed myself onto the adjacent nature strip amongst the wattle bush. That same day, I received a phone call from someone who lived not so far away from that house, telling me they had a kangaroo hop through their front yard. Both of these places are in the Mornington Peninsula. Naturally, I imagined a narrative for this latest artwork where both exist but in two different places.
There is something enchanting about the Australian suburbs that I find irresistible. The humble letterboxes stand like sentinels of stories, and the fences weave tales of neighborly bonds. The flora and fauna dance in a symphony of colors and sounds, while vintage caravans rest in front yards, holding whispers of adventures past. These elements blend together, painting a vivid mosaic of my Australian home. I hear the melodic songs of birds and the iconic Aussie tunes playing softly in the background. This is my sanctuary, my kingdom, and I am the Queen of Suburbia.
